Kirundi for 'together,' Turihamwe is grown and processed by seven women farmers at Burundi's first women-owned washing station. Their fine attention to detail results in a bright, sweet, and citrusy cup. In Burundi, cultural norms are slowly shifting in the coffee sector. Historically, women have been restricted to traditional roles: housekeeping, caring for children, growing trees, and harvesting cherries, while heads of households deliver the cherries to the wet mill and control the flow of money, often paying women unequal wages. Land in Burundi is also passed down through men, making it incredibly difficult for women to own farmland. More than sixty percent of the contributing farmers of this lot are women, reflecting their commitment to support women in coffee production.
Heart it if you’d brew it, or pass.
Burundi Turihamwe is a high-acidity coffee from Ngozi Province, Burundi. Acidity means a bright, lively taste, not a sour cup. The lemon note is part of that brightness.
